I paid for the car and insurance on-line. When I got to the airport, I was told that the insurance was no good and that the car and mandatory insurance would cost $950....double what I was quoted on-line.

efficient car return at Santo Domingo airport

I booked 2 SUVs for my family vacation to DR and when got to Santo Domingo airport I was told there were no SUVs but they could offer us 2 small cars. When I protested I was met with a shrug and told “it’s the holiday season. There are no SUVs”. It’s clear that there was never an intention to rent us SUVs and it felt like we were lured into renting from Hertz. We ended up paying close to the SUV price for the small cars we got instead. There are beach roads in DR that need SUVs. We had to avoid those. I previously rented SUVs from Avis in Santiago DR during this exact same holiday week with no issue.

Staff were friendly and efficient. Pick up and drop off were relatively fast and easy.

The van was in a significant state of disrepair, the seats were torn and stained, the van had not been vacuumed out (there were cookies laying in the back luggage area, the vehicle had damage on pretty much every corner and side of the vehicle, the window tinting was pealing off. The insurance that kayak is selling on the website does not work in the Dom. Rep. Felt like a bait and switch where they charged 5-6 times as much money for insurance in the country that was was sold to me online (about $400-500 for 9 days), I had to cancel the online policy because it was not accepted in the country of the rental (it shouldn’t be offered!).

The van we rented was good!

They make you buy their rental insurance even though we had bought our own before renting. This doubled the price. Then when I got the final charge it was even more!

There is not adequate communication about insurance requirements when booking the car. I had car insurance through my trip insurance and was allowed to book with that. When I got to the pickup, I was told I had to obtain expensive insurance from the rental company. When sprung upon me at pickup it feels like extortion. I will never book through this company again.

I reserved a mid-size sedan but they gave ma sub-compact. ThenEurocar forced me to buy their CDW insurance, an expense that was not clearly stated when I made my online reservation and doubled the stated price, and then they told me I had damaged the car and wanted more money, but finally agreed to no extra charges
